Daily Blessings… sometimes it’s good to be uncomfortable…but not too uncomfortable.
I had the occasion to be waaaaaay outside my comfort zone yesterday. I knew it was coming and a big part of me didn’t want to go there. I was scared and nervous and worried about making mistakes, being judged and being successful.
Fortunately I wanted to do it more than I didn’t want to do it… if that makes sense. Dr Phil would say that my payoff for taking the risks was greater than my fear.
It got me thinking about our comfort zones. I would like to share this with you.
Think of a number scale from 0 to 10
0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
0 – 2: Couch potato zone. There is not much activity or challenge happening at this level.
- Rest
- Recharge the batteries
- Quiet… still
2 – 5 1/2: Comfort zone. This is where most of us spend most of our time.
- We drive the same way to work
- Cook the same weekly meals
- Watch the same programs on TV
- Routine, routine, routine… comfortable… it works…
- There is not a lot of learning going on in the comfort zone.
- The regular living zone
5 1/2 – 8: Learning zone. We are just uncomfortable enough to be creative and searching for new ideas.
- We don’t have all the answers here
- We are not sure of the outcome
- We may have to take a risk
- Yummy action hangs out here
8 – 10: Adrenelin zone: This is a once in a while zone. We are not built to stay in this zone for extended periods of time.
- Hard to learn when you are having the bejeebers scared out of you
The payoff is tremendous when you want an experience enough to risk being uncomfortable.
For me, I am so glad I took my risk yesterday. I plan to do it again and again. I will keep growing and learning and expanding.
I absolutely want to live a life of adventure. I can handle my learning zone. I just don’t plan on jumping out of any airplanes in the next little while… that would be a 10 for me… yikes!
